Don’t risk another health crisis by ignoring symptoms
The promise of spring is emerging in nature, and there is a glimmer of hope in overcoming the Covid crisis thanks to the roll-out of vaccinations.
About 11% of the UK population has now received vaccination jabs including the majority of medical and nursing staff.
This means that our hospitals and clinics are even safer to visit for outpatient appointments and non-COVID treatments.
I am making these points to encourage patients to attend for check-ups and not to ignore any symptoms.
Government and health leaders are becoming increasingly concerned about the delivery of non-COVID critical services like cancer care.
In London alone, the number of operations performed for cancer is currently less than 50% of the what would usually be carried out at this time of year.
Patients allowed to attend check-ups
It is worth making the point that although we are in lockdown, patients are allowed under the guidelines to travel and attend for medical appointments.
Since the start of the pandemic, I have been doing as much work as possible by phone appointment and online video conferencing.
I will be continuing to do this. But it is not possible to conduct every appointment remotely, and patients can feel extremely confident about visiting hospitals and clinics for treatments or check-ups.
Not only are there stringent hygiene and safety protocols in place, but medical staff have been among the first to receive the vaccination.
It is vital that patients attend for appointments if they are asked to do so, otherwise we may be at risk of starting another health crisis – in cancer cases.
