My term as president of cancer section of RSM gets underway

I am honoured to say that I have been appointed as President of the Oncology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM).

The RSM is one of the major providers of postgraduate medical education in the UK, organising over 400 academic and public events each year.

I feel proud and privileged to have been appointed to such a prestigious position for the next two years until the end of September 2023.

With a history going back over 200 years, the RSM is one of the top medical organisations in the world with 22,500 members.

The Oncology Section’s purpose is to enable all those investigating all forms of cancer to meet regularly to share knowledge, expertise and experience.

Already we are working on a busy programme for the next two years.

In January we have events on the latest developments in cancer genetics, epigenetics and resulting therapeutics.

Later in the year we are holding an event focused on percutaneous lung ablation.

Focus on research

As a clinical researcher, I am aware of the challenges of recruiting patients to trials and one of my goals will be to stimulate a discussion about how the profession can make this process easier for all.

The importance of research has come into sharp focus during the COVID pandemic as scientists around the world rose to the challenge and produced effective vaccines in record time.

There are currently many different avenues of research going on in the UK and across the globe to tackle cancer.

As President of the Oncology Section at the RSM, I will be endeavouring to ensure that all those working in oncology are aware of the latest developments and have the opportunity to discuss and share their work.
